Congo Travel Special: Volcano Hike

06-21-2012

Today's blog, safari adventurers take first steps on moon like surface at Nyamuragira Volcano in Virunga National Park. Located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, reminders of civil war looms over the country with its airport riddled with tanks. Stay tuned for more blogs as they encounter gorillas and chimpanzees.

Walking on Nyamuragira's week old lava flow, Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo.

I’ve just been hiking up Nyamuragira Volcano in Virunga National Park.  It was actually erupting up until a week ago.  We were the first people to walk on the fresh lava.  It was like a moon landscape, with sulphur gas coming up through vents.  The residual heat from the rock melted our shoes.

We walked for four hours and camped in two man tents pitched on top of boards because the ground was so rough.

This trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is my first time traveling with both my fellow guides, Sandor Carter and Michael Lorentz.

It’s an amazing place.  The DRC is raw Africa.  The country is recovering from a terrible civil war and Goma airport still looks like a war zone.  There are tanks bedded under netting along the airstrips.  Life is very hard for its people.  In many ways, it’s what people expect Africa to be like.  And I suppose it’s a mark of the continent’s progress that for us, who live in Africa, the DRC feels so out of the ordinary.
