MARSEILLES-FOS 2007 RESULTS/2008 OUTLOOK
Port of Marseilles-Fos
2008-01-28 06:20:06
With a 0.6% increase on 2006, Marseilles handled a record 2,038,000 passengers in 2007 - underlined by a 14% rise in cruise visitors, which at 429,000 now accounts for 21% of the port’s passenger activity compared with 6% ten years ago. Ferry carryings dipped 1.4%, with Corsica and Tunisia up a point on 859,000 and 258,000 respectively but Algeria down 9% on 461,000 due to stricter Customs controls and low-cost airline competition. In contrast, the cruise sector’s contribution sailed past a target of 400,000 for the year. ‘Home port’ passengers rose 43% on 2006 and at 110,000 now represent a quarter of the cruise total. The number of passengers in transit rose by 7% to 319,000. Aiming for one million cruise passengers a year by 2011, the port authority launched a concession tender last June offering private management of the Marseille Provence Cruise Center and designated berths in return for the volume guarantee. Results of the call for tenders should be known in the first half of this year. Ro-ro traffic grew 6% on 2006 to reach 4.3 million tonnes while cruise passengers beat a 400,000 target with a 10% increase to 415,000. This number is set to more than double from 2011 following a recent concession tender offering management of the port’s main cruise facilities to a private operator in return for minimum annual throughput of one million passengers.
