Once a month the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism distributes this brief newsletter, providing tourism updates from throughout the state of Kansas.  Highlights include a title, brief descriptor and a link for more details.   Not all highlights will be of interest to everyone.  They are simply intended to entice new story ideas in the areas of agritourism, outdoor, culinary, cultural, history, heritage and more.  

 

Homespun to Cosmopolitan, Enjoy the Holidays in Kansas:  Kansas communities are decking the halls for the holiday season, and Santa is coming by train and by trolley.  On December 3 and 4, kids, their parents and their grandparents will delight in riding the Midland Express Railway Santa Claus Express train in Baldwin City.  Each child will have a chance to visit Santa in his special rail car.  In Abilene, families will enjoy the company of Santa Claus as they travel on the trolley around town.  Parades, holiday light displays, holiday performing arts and statewide festivals are all part of the celebration.  Visit www.travelks.com/holiday for all of the holiday happenings in Kansas.

 

Norman Rockwell:  Home for the Holidays Exhibit on Display at Stauth Memorial Museum in Montezuma:  For seven weeks beginning on December 11, 2011 and running through January 29, 2012, some of Norman Rockwell’s most memorable images will be on view at the Stauth Memorial Museum in a special holiday installation of original artworks and objects.  This exhibition features original Saturday Evening Post cover tear sheets and includes many of Norman Rockwell’s most enduring holiday images.  Tours and groups are welcome by appointment.  Visitwww.stauthmemorialmuseum.org for more information. 

 

Take a Step Back in Time with Cooking Workshops Offered by the Kansas Historic Society:  Join the Kansas Historic Society on the second Saturday of January, February and March 2012 for some fun and informative wood stove cooking demonstrations at the Grinter Place State Historic Site in Kansas City.  This is the oldest home in Wyandotte County, where visitors step back into the days of Frontier life along the Kansas and Missouri borders.  Other activities include a tour of the Grinter house and lunch.  For more information visit www.kshs.org/event/grinter-place-second-saturdays-by-the-grinter-stove-1/17195.
