Around the campfire, stories of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, Lewis and Clark, cowboy poetry and, of course, live music incite families to roast marshmallows, stargaze and surrender to the river‚s charms, hostage to a primitive world where electronic devices won‚t work.  (Steve Lentz, owner of Far and Away Adventures http://www.far-away.com/ assures that emergency and pertinent business contact is always possible via satellite phone).

To make sure that texting-deprived youngsters stay engaged, Far and Away Adventures‚ „eco-tainment‰ staff comes to the fore, providing opportunities for experiences that both immerse and empower in the natural environment. On the first night of each journey, each guest receives a „safari‰ journal listing the wildlife and flora / fauna to be discovered along the river route.

„Our focus is on placing that passion and curiosity into the hands of trained professionals who love working with children and letting them work their magic with youthful energies,‰ Lentz notes. At day‚s end, children are offered healthy snacks to tide them over to dinner while parents enjoy wine and appetizers.

Far and Away Adventures walks the sustainable talk throughout its programs. While offering the world's most luxurious wilderness whitewater rafting on Idaho's Middle Fork of the Salmon and the Wild and Scenic Bruneau, they do so in a fully sustainable and organic manner with, among others, a leave-no-trace ethic and gourmet meals that are 95 percent organic from locally sourced foods. Health for the environment and for the guest come together daily, with morning yoga and a trained massage therapist on call on every trip.

There‚s action enough plying the Class II through IV rapids throughout the day, but for intrepid river rats there‚s a fleet of inflatable kayaks and paddle rafts that make every riffle an adventure. Fly fishing outings and hikes can also be arranged.

Encampments rival the safari setting of a Hemingway story with a full service kitchen, luxurious chairs and a dining table set with stoneware, linen, and stemware, illuminated by candlelight and soft lanterns. Tents are furnished with elevated beds, comfy flannel bedding, full size pillows, and carpet under foot. Water for showers is heated by solar.
