Vist Rappahannock County, Virginia this Summer!

06-17-2011

Summer days seem longer near the Blue Ridge Mountains. Mornings linger with coolness and afternoons drift into sunset evenings. The grapes become heavier and wine tasting is a summer pastime. Hay bales, cattle and sheep dot the picturesque countryside. It's a time to indulge your senses in nature and to gather with friends and family to experience the fullness of summer in the country.

Much Is New in Rappahannock County for You This Summer!

Shenandoah National Park commemorates its 75th anniversary on June 25 with a day of festivities at Big Meadows. Official ceremonies in the morning mark the historic founding of the park and rededicate the park to a future of preserving nature for generations to come. Local communities from both sides of the mountains — the Piedmont Region and the Shenandoah Valley — will host tables packed with information on what to do in their areas. Park rangers will host programs throughout the summer months — explore nature trails or favorite places such as White Oak Canyon, Mary's Rock or Old Rag Mountain. Visit the 75th anniversarywebsite for details on the entire year-long celebration.

The Castleton Festival, which opens June 25, presents opera, symphonic concerts, recitals and more under the direction of Founder and Artistic Director Maestro Lorin Maazel, one of the world's most celebrated conductors. Entering its third season, the festival brings together more than 200 talented, young artistic professionals, creating and presenting exceptional performances of fully staged operas and glorious symphonic music. The Castleton Festival, running through July 24, is a perfect reason to plan your Rappahannock County getaway. Visit the Castleton Festivalwebsite for performances, dining options and special accommodation packages.

The Rappahannock County community celebrates July 4th in a big way — and you are invited to join us! A full day of family activities, including food, games, live music, vendors, hot air balloon rides and more are set against the scenic backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A colorful fireworks display is the evening's grand finale. You also can bring your own picnic basket to celebrate our nation's birthday with beautiful views of Shenandoah National Park.
