Cruising the Kimberly

True North - where the big ships can't go

I’d been told that an expedition cruise aboard True North would an experience I wouldn’t soon forget and I was eager to see just how unforgettable this journey would be. We boarded the vessel at Wyndham Port in Western Australia for our voyage through the Kimberley. We were met by Craig and Holly Howson, the owners of True North and taken to our spacious deluxe cabin on the Explorer Deck.  We settle in at the bar and set sail soon after. I knew this was going to be an expedition to remember.

True North is 160 feet long with just 18 cabins and 19 crew (who are all Australian which provides a great local touch), so this is definitely an exclusive experience for a fortunate few. There’s a bar lounge, dining room and even a helicopter that makes herself at home aboard the vessel to provide access to remote areas from the ship – more about these exciting excursions later.

Meals are inspired and always fresh and delicious with much of the menu coming together based on what the ship’s fishermen have managed to catch that day! From eggs benedict to pork belly, crab, and even a Vietnamese-style papaya salad, the variety of cuisine was always delightful. There’s a good selection of wine to compliment the food as well as beer, spirits and soda. There’s also a 24-hour tea and coffee making area.
