NEWS ALERTS

VOLUME #37: MARCH ‘11

Once a month the Kansas Travel & Tourism Division distributes this brief newsletter, providing tourism updates from throughout the state of Kansas.  Highlights include a title, brief descriptor and a link for more details.   Not all highlights will be of interest to everyone.  They are simply intended to entice new story ideas in the areas of agritourism, outdoor, culinary, cultural, history, heritage and more.

Discover Unique Museums in Virtually Every Corner of Kansas:  Families traveling on vacation this summer might discover one of their most memorable moments at a home-grown Kansas museum!  For example, the Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum in Arkansas City retells the stories of American settlers and the Native American cultures they interacted with before, during and after the Cherokee Strip Land Rush of 1893.  The museum features educational exhibits, historic memorabilia and a real life replica of a nearby Wichita Indian village dating from the early to mid 1700s.  New this year at the museum is the Bill Baird Memorial Pioneer Farm and Garden.  This living farm exhibit is reminiscent of a turn of the 20th century farm and offers classes on pioneer farming, animal husbandry, organic gardening, canning and tending bee hives.  For more information visit www.arkcity.org/index.aspx?ID=216.

Farmers Share their Goods Throughout the Entire Summer:  As you travel across Kansas this summer, check out the closest Farmer’s Market.  In all likelihood it is much closer than you think!  Kansas' collection of farmer's markets feature locally grown produce, fresh flowers and everything from homemade jellies to bison jerky.  What’s more, many weekly markets offer crafts, baked goods and ready-to-eat snacks.  Farmer's Markets are typically open on Saturdays during the summer months of June-September, but some open as early as April and continue as late as November.   To locate a Farmer’s Market closest to you on your next visit to Kansas visitwww.travelks.com/farmersmarket

Set Your Sights on Kansas Spring Turkey Hunting:   Hunters will be thrilled to learn that Kansas turkey populations are dense this year, so plan now to bag your limit while enjoying the great outdoors. Spring turkey archery season begins April 1, and regular firearm season is April 13-May 31. Kansas has more than a million public acres open seasonally to hunters. To find your perfect spot or to purchase your permit/license visitwww.travelks.com/hunting.html.
