Explore the Ancient Ruins of Machu Picchu on Horseback

01-03-2008

Millbrook, NY-January 2, 2008-Visit the legendary Lost City of the Incas on horseback with Cross Country International's new Machu Picchu Trail Ride.

The Machu Picchu Trail Ride takes riders over and through the mountain passes of Peru and into the Lost City of the Incas, seemingly tucked away from the rest of the world. Hidden for centuries from the outside world until its discovery in 1911, this vacation brings you face-to-face with Peruvian history as well as exposing you to some of the most beautiful scenery known to man.

"Without-a-doubt, the best way to explore Machu Picchu is by horseback," said Karen Lancaster, President of Cross Country International. "Trotting over mountain passes and cantering across fields gives you access to the best views and scenery in an exciting way that few tourists get to experience."

Your vacation begins with a tour of the city of Cusco, followed by a drive to the Coronilla Ranch, located in the mountain village of Mollepata. From here, you'll saddle up and ride out to the Salkantay Lodge & Adventure Resort located in Soraypampa with a picnic lunch en route. You will visit Humantay Lake and explore the base of the Salkantay Peak. Enjoy the scenery of the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcamba Range and the south face of Salkantay Peak towering above as you ride toward Machu Picchu to explore the Lost City. Riders will want to keep their eyes pealed for nesting condors, often visible in this area.

You will travel through the plantations of the Santa Teresa River Valley, known for growing some of the best organic coffee and bananas in the world. You may choose an optional hike to explore the Llactapata Inca Trail which takes you to the Lumca Lodge as well as an optional-day hike to explore the Llactapata Ruins, which have recently been restored. You will also enjoy a complete guided tour of Machu Picchu, as well as 4-6 hours to explore the ruins on your own.
