THE KAHALA HOTEL AND RESORT GOES NAPA FOR FOOD AND WINE CLASSIC WEEKEND
APRIL 22-23, 2011

The Kahala Hosts Napa Valley's Chef Cindy Pawlcyn, Pride Mountain Vineyards plus Davidoff Cigars

HONOLULU, HI (January 13, 2011) - Grab your wine glasses and cooking aprons--The Kahala Hotel and Resort's 2011 Food and Wine Classic is bringing Bravo TV's chef Cindy Pawlcyn to town. Pawlcyn is a Napa Valley icon and James Beard Award-winning author. Her restaurant Mustards Grill has been around since 1983 and is still a favorite local spot for everyone from working winemakers to sojourning foodies.

Cindy is joined by Napa vintners Suzanne Pride Bryan and Stuart Bryan of Pride Mountain Vineyards, famous for their listing in Wine Spectator's "Top 100" wines. The Kahala Food and Wine classic regular Michael Herklots from Davidoff Cigars of Geneva will also be on hand, as will award-winning vintner Fred Schrader of Schrader Cellars, who will also be MC for the weekend. The Kahala's own chef Wayne Hirabayashi will present a specialty menu paired with a wineology seminar, and will oversee the main dinners featuring inspiration from Mustards Grill and Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen.

A favorite of foodies, wine and cigar connoisseurs, the Food and Wine Classic is in its fourth year at the Kahala. April's classic offers a variety of events including five-course gourmet dinners with wine parings by Pride Mountain Vineyards on Friday and Saturday nights; a Saturday night premium cigar-smoking session from 10 until half past midnight; a Saturday morning cooking class with Chef Cindy Pawlcyn; a Wineology Seminar with Suzanne Pride Bryan and Stuart Bryan; and a Saturday afternoon cigar lesson with Davidoff's main cigar man, Michael Herklots (who's flying in from New York.)

Cindy Pawlcyn is chef and owner of Mustards Grill, Go Fish, and Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen in St. Helena, the heart of California's Napa Valley wine growing region. Mustards Grill has been the hub of Napa Valley dining for over 27 years. It's where winemakers lunch with locals and chefs come to dine on their night off. Cindy is a pioneer of wine country cuisine. Long before chefs' gardens became popular, Pawlcyn had an organic garden where she could draw seasonal inspiration for her dishes while treating her diners to the pure, bright flavors of fresh-picked produce. She's also been involved in the creation of over a dozen new restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area including Bix, Fog City Diner, Roti, Betelnut, Buckeye Roadhouse, and Tra Vigne. Pawlcyn has twice been nominated for the James Beard Foundation award for Best Chef in California and is the recipient of the Robert Mondavi Award for Culinary Excellence and the Fine Beverage and Food Federation's Career Achievement Award.

Pride Mountain Vineyards is a 235-acre estate with a wooden-beamed winery and over 23,000 square feet of subterranean wine storage located twenty-minutes from St. Helena. Its first owners originally called the estate Summit Ranch in 1869. In 1989, it came into the hands of the Pride family who now own and actively manage the vineyards and winery. Jim Pride, who died in 2004, was a hands-on farmer with a sharp eye for quality and a deep commitment to excellence. Winemaker Sally Johnson to continue Jim's legacy in winemaking has joined his wife Carolyn, and their two children, Suzanne Pride Bryan and Steven Pride. Since its humble beginnings, the Pride's have grown Pride Mountain Vineyards into a world-class estate. Pride Mountain Vineyards produces a selection of Viognier, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. The Wine Advocate, The Wine Spectator, Wine & Spirits, The Wine Enthusiast, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Connoisseurs' Guide, California Grapevine, and other wine and food publications frequently review their wines.

Davidoff is one of the world's premium cigar companies. It has expanded its line of premium cigars and promotes cigar smoking as the crowning part of a gourmet experience. Herklots will be on hand to introduce a variety of new and favorite cigars from Davidoff's famous brands.

Fred Schrader has committed his life to making the highest quality wines possible. Since co-founding the now legendary Colgin-Schrader Cellars in 1992, Schrader later founded Schrader Cellars in 1998, gathering the finest vineyard resources and winemaking talents to produce namesake Cabernets that consistently garner top ratings from America's most renowned critics.
