Lose the eco-guilt

You're at 30,000 feet cruising overseas on a Virgin Atlantic flight to Europe. With a friendly smile, the cabin attendant asks, "Coffee, tea, carbon offset?"

Huh?

Yeah, carbon offset - doing something positive to offset the negative carbon footprint you create. Like cycling or using public transport instead of your own car, insulating your home, turning your heating down or using energy efficient light bulbs.

Renovating a hydropower plant in rural Sumatra increased electricity and reduced CO2 emissions.

So Virgin's new scheme is to encourage passengers to offset their share of CO2 emissions generated by the plane taking them across the ocean. Of course they can't reduce the carbon being dumped into the atmosphere by the plane's jets, but they can offset their share of its effects by supporting projects that have immediate positive impact on the environment.

Virgin calls the program their Gold Standard Offset Scheme. They've calculated exactly how much carbon is produced for each of its flights and then calculated how much this would equal for each passenger, using a complicated formula that takes into account the different weights of equipment and seats in each class of travel, and also the amount of cargo on each route. (So Upper Class passengers pay more than Premium Economy or regular Economy passengers because Upper Class seats and in-flight entertainment monitors are significantly heavier. Nicely democratic don't you think?)

Endorsed by 49 non-governmental organizations worldwide including many environmental groups, Gold Standard credits are independently validated, adhere to best practice methodology and only support renewable energy or energy efficiency technologies. Virgin Atlantic is the only airline to commit to Gold Standard projects because it believes that this is the only offset standard that guarantees a positive additional impact on local communities and the environment.
