South Haven, MI - The Michigan Maritime Museum is celebrating the season with its annual Maritime Merriment event on Friday, December 15th. from 10 AM until 3 PM. Museum Executive Director Ellen Sprouls reports that there will be something in store for every member of the family. For the first time ever the Tall Ship Friend’s Good Will will be open for public boarding in the winter. Though not under sail, the sloop’s deck has been covered to protect dockside visitors from the weather and provide space for planned dramatic readings of The Christmas Tree Ship a holiday story that is a maritime favorite. While on board visitors can craft their own miniature Christmas Tree.

Sprouls said there will be activities in every corner of the museum’s campus. A lantern trial will lead visitors to the historic fish tug Evelyn S. where they will receive a free fishnet float that can be used as a holiday tree ornament. Visit the Padnos boat building shed and work stations will be waiting for holiday merry makers to craft their own bent wood sail hank ornament.

Choral groups and musicians will be performing songs of the holidays and chanteys with a seasonal flavor all day long in the Van Oort Boathouse. Visitors are also invited to join in a reenactment as the Light House Keeper and his family prepare for the holidays in the museum’s main gallery building.

Door prizes will be awarded several times during the festivities and one lucky merry maker will go home with a fresh cut full size nautically themed Christmas tree. Holiday refreshments will be served throughout the day and the Museum gift shop will feature many nautically themed gifts at special sale prices. The event is free for museum members, a $5 adult and $3 children’s admission will be charged for non-members. All activities are included in the admission price.

The Michigan Maritime Museum is located at the Black River Bridge in South Haven and is currently celebrating its 32nd year as one of Southwestern Michigan’s premiere educational attractions.
