Buffalo Airport Exhibit Introduces Flyers to Wine Country

08-07-2010

August 6, 2010 – Travelers who come and go through the busy Buffalo Airport will be invited to make a little side trip inside America’s Grape Country now through October.

An exhibit in the airport’s Regional Gallery Showcase touts the region’s role as the “Grape Juice Capital of the World” and its growing importance in the nation’s wine industry.

The exhibit, which provides a sweeping view of vineyards in western Pennsylvania and New York, is a collaborative effort between the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail and the Niagara Wine Trail, with support from the New York Wine & Grape Foundation.  The wine trails are located 45 minutes outside of Buffalo.

With 30,000 acres of rolling vineyards along the southeastern shore of Lake Erie, the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail is the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies. The Niagara Wine Trail, nestled between the Niagara escarpment and Lake Ontario, is an up-and-coming wine producer, just minutes from Niagara Falls. Together, the regions boast 35 wineries and a diverse and growing wine list.

Visitors to the gallery enter through a handcrafted grape arbor to see vestiges of the region’s agricultural heritage, which dates back to 1818. Artifacts include an antique wine press, a grape cart, and oak wine barrels used to age the region’s award-winning wines.

The 18-panel exhibit takes visitors on a pictorial journey illustrated with lush contemporary photographs, old postcards, grape labels, and little-known facts. Wine trail brochures, calendars of events and maps are there for the taking. All that’s missing is the wine. For that, you will have to come visit the real thing.

The exhibit, entitled “Sip, Swirl, Savor the Experience,” will remain in the airport gallery through October. The gallery is located inside security across from the Anchor Bar. For a virtual tour, visit the airport’s web site,http://www.buffaloairport.com/showcase.asp
