Whistler Vibe: Tourism Whistler's monthly media newsletter

Welcome to Tourism Whistler's media newsletter, featuring information on what's new and noteworthy, upcoming events as well as quirky and interesting Whistler story ideas.

July 2010

Summer is in full swing with ample activities and events in the valley and interestingly a winter wonderland in the alpine. This July, Whistler’s offerings are as diverse as they come.

WHAT’S NEW

For the first time ever Whistler Blackcomb offers snowshoeing and tubing – in July!

This July is quite unique in that record-breaking winter snowfall has ensured plenty of white stuff is sticking to the alpine. Whilst alpine hiking is on hold for a few more weeks, for the first time ever Whistler Blackcomb will offer snow shoe hire and a three-lane tube park at the top of the Whistler Village Gondola. Head up the mountains and you really can enjoy two very distinct seasons in one day – in July!  Blackcomb's Horstman Glacier remains open until July 25 – again with the best skiing and riding conditions seen in years. Sightseeing guests can experience the world’s longest continual lift system with a ride up Whistler Gondola, across the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola and down Solar Coaster and Wizard Chairs on Blackcomb (or vice versa). Peak Chair opens for summer season sightseeing on June 26.

2010 Winter Games – Legacy of New Experiences for Visitors

With the recent hand over of venues to Whistler Sporting Legacies Society, Whistler Sliding Centre and Whistler Olympic/ Paralympic Park have re-opened for the public to explore these incredible facilities that will be enjoyed by athletes, locals and visitors for many years to come.

In addition, Whistler Eco Tours has added a new tour to the menu – a four hour interpretive tour of the two facilities. View the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton event site. Then check out the 70 and 90-metre ski jumps and learn about the sports of biathlon, Nordic combined and cross-country skiing. whistlerecotours.com

Both venues are also open to the general public for guided or self-guided walking tours. Later this year – Whistler Sliding Centre will be providing guests with the unique opportunity to try the sport of bobsleigh and skeleton first hand. wsl2010.com

FACES OF WHISTLER

Profile: Jordan Sturdy – Farmer, mayor, agri-tourism entrepreneur

Jordan Sturdy has worn a number of hats throughout his professional life including butcher, model, paramedic, logger, fashion industry executive, ski patroller and politician. Shortly after purchasing the 45-acre North Arm Farm in 1995, he and his wife Trish spearheaded a movement that has helped garner international acclaim for local agri-tourism. The family-run business includes retail and wholesale vegetable and fruit sales, a u-pick option for visitors, as well as fresh preserves and oven-fresh baked goods. Produce from the farm is a staple of Whistler’s annual culinary-focused events including Slow Food Cycle Sunday, Feast in the Mountains, Outstanding in the Field and Cornucopia. Jordan can also lay claim to the title of most popular stall at the Whistler Farmers’ Market.

Jordan’s relationship with many chefs in Whistler has led to an increased exposure for local produce on the plates of award-winning restaurants in the resort. He routinely make trips in his white pickup truck to Whistler – some 25 minutes south of Pemberton – to meet with a few chefs (including Executive Chef James Walt of Araxi) and discuss plans for planting in the upcoming season. This collaborative approach allows the restaurants to showcase cuisine that reflects the unique, artistic approach of their chefs – as well as the diversity of the local farming community.

New this year – Jordan has partnered with a passionate and youthful couple known as ‘The Foodlovers’. Their inspiration comes from the organically grown berries and the eclectic assortment of vegetables from the farm. Visitor can shop at the Foodlovers farm store or enjoy a meal in the outdoor weekend bistro overlooking North Arm Farm and magnificent Mount Currie.
