SAIL IN THE BODRUM CUP REGATTA

08-13-2009

Peter Sommer Travels, a leading provider of specialist archaeological tours, gulet cruises and private charters in Turkey and Greece, offers a brand new, one-of-a-kind cruise trip, The Bodrum Cup Regatta (Sat 10 Oct – Mon 26 Oct, 2009).

In addition to exploring Turkey’s spectacular coastal sites aboard a luxurious wooden gulet, passengers will learn how to sail and then take part in the exciting 5-day Bodrum Cup Regatta.

This unique 17-day cruise combines an archaeological tour of the Turkish coast with the chance to participate in the celebrated Bodrum Cup. After departing from Gocek, near Dalaman, the cruise heads westwards along Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, stopping to soak up Greek and Roman-era sites such as Phoenix, Lydae and Knidos before arriving in Bodrum, ancient Halicarnassus.  During the sail, passengers will learn the necessary skills, under the guidance of the crew, in preparation for the regatta.

The Bodrum Cup (www.bodrumcup.com), celebrating its 20th year this year, marks the end of the cruising season in October and is unique in that only traditional and classic wooden yachts, or ‘gulets’, are permitted to compete in the main regatta. Organised by the ERA Bodrum Sailing Club, the Bodrum Cup is also the only regatta in Europe in which passengers are permitted onboard and can participate as crew members. The regatta, with over 100 participating vessels every year, welcomes private yachts, Turkish or foreign-flagged, and although only traditional and classic wooden yachts can compete for the Cup, non-wooden ones are accepted as non-competing guests. The atmosphere is lively and festive and there is such an array of prizes that few competitors come home empty-handed.

The cruise will be personally led by company founder Peter Sommer, a British archaeologist and award winning film-maker who has been organising and leading archaeological tours in Turkey and Greece since 1996. In 1994 Peter Sommer walked 2,000 miles across Turkey, retracing the route of Alexander the Great, and fell deeply in love with the country. His passion for its ancient sites led to the founding of Peter Sommer Travels, a specialist tour operator that organises exceptional archaeological and cultural tours.
