Cruising the Carian Coast, which begins in Bodrum, ancient Halicarnassus, and heads eastwards to Gocek (near Dalaman) along a gorgeous stretch of Turkey’s coastline, is among Peter Sommer Travels’ popular family tours, ideal for families with children aged 7-16. While exploring the past, the whole family is able to relax and enjoy fine food in sybaritic settings. The cruise, which includes an eclectic blend of cultural delights, historical adventures, and water sports, visits ancient towns like Phoenix and Lydae; the exquisite rock-cut tombs of Caunos; and Knidos with its double harbour. Cruising Western Lycia, which starts and ends in Gocek (near Dalaman), features breathtaking natural scenery and ruins galore. Each day the cruise visits a different ancient city along the coast, highlights of which include Xanthus, the capital of ancient Lycia, and Ucagiz (ancient Teimiussa), with its evocative tombs. The cruise also visits the beautiful towns of Fethiye and Kas and Gemiler Island, known for its Byzantine churches. Dr. Nigel Spivey, a fellow at Cambridge University and author of several books about the ancient world, leads this cruise.
