Nacogdoches to ring in Christmas holidays with 2009 Nine Flags Festival
06-30-2009NACOGDOCHES – Historic downtown Nacogdoches will be transformed into a winter wonderland for the upcoming 2009 Nine Flags Festival with more than 3 million holiday lights, a sparkling fireworks display and the largest lighted Christmas parade in East Texas.
The 13th annual celebration of Texas history & culture will be held Nov. 21 through Dec. 12 in Nacogdoches, located about 150 miles north of Houston via U.S. 59. Nine different flags have flown over the oldest town in Texas throughout its rich history, and this year’s festival will pay special tribute to the Texas flag.
“Preparations are already well under way for this year’s Texas themed festival, and we have lots of excitement planned for this holiday season,” said Ashleigh Endicott, event coordinator for the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“From touring an elegantly decorated, historic home to watching the lighted Christmas parade wind its way through the brick streets of downtown to drinking wassail while shopping in our unique local shops and galleries, the Nine Flags Festival offers something for everyone.”
The festival kicks off with the downtown lighting and opening ceremony Nov. 21. With the flip of a switch, more than 3 million twinkling lights strung along the historic buildings and landscaping will set downtown Nacogdoches aglow.
Downtown merchants will be cooking up their best wassail Saturday, Nov. 28, for Wassail Fest when they compete for bragging rights for the best warm holiday brew. Shoppers are invited to enjoy the wassail as they meander the shops in search of antiques and one-of-a-kind holiday gifts.
The Nine Flags Festival will also include the annual Christmas celebration at Millard’s Crossing Historic Village on Friday, December 4th. Visitors to this charming reconstructed historic village experience East Texas life as it was in the 19th century. The popular lighted downtown Christmas parade is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, followed by the fireworks display.
Other festival activities will include the 5-K Jingle Bell Run (and 3-K walk), Tour de Nac Bike Ride, musical performances, pancakes with Santa, free children’s activities and various in-store events sponsored by the downtown merchants.
“There is no better place to ring in the holiday season than right here in the Oldest Town in Texas during the 13th annual Nine Flags Festival,” Endicott said.
