MOUNT WASHINGTON RESORT CELEBRATES THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BRETON WOODS CONFERENCE

06-27-2009

Guests are Welcome to Participate in a Piece of Modern Day History

BRETTON WOODS, N.H., June 25, 2009 – Mount Washington Resort, New England’s premier four-season destination, has announced plans to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference with a special Gold Standard package and a variety of activities throughout the weekend of July 24 – 26, 2009, including a panel discussion and special dinner reception on Saturday evening.  The historical package includes a two-night stay at The Mount Washington Hotel, complete with daily breakfast and dinner, as well as a special commemorative gift.  Rates start at $194.40 per person, based on double occupancy.

The Bretton Woods Conference, also known as the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference, was a meeting of delegates from 44 different countries to agree upon a post-World War II international monetary system.  In the post-war economic depression, it was important for all nations to come to an agreement for peace and prosperity worldwide.  Through this conference, they successfully established the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), which is currently part of the World Bank.

On Saturday, July 25, guests will be able to visit the Grand Ballroom to take part in a panel discussion regarding the International Monetary Conference.  Moderator Myron Kandel, CNN’s founding financial editor, will moderate the discussion and help translate the events of the Bretton Woods Conference into terms that apply to today.  Kandel will be joined by James Boughton, Historian of the International Monetary Fund based in Washington, DC; Joseph Brusuelas, an economist from Moody’s Economy.com; Jeffrey S. Coons, Co-Director of Research, Manning & Napier in Rochester, NY; and Ross Gittell, James R Carter Professor & Professor of Management, Whittemore School of Business and Economics, University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH.  All guests and speakers will be a part of modern-day history, sitting exactly where the delegates actually sat for 22 days in July of 1944.

The most important aspect of this conference was the creation of the gold standard.  By fixing the U.S. dollar to gold, foreign exchange become more efficient to promote economic growth.  This helped strengthen the global economy and encourage international trade.

Also on Saturday, July 25, Mount Washington Resort will host a special dinner in the Dining Room.  Executive Director of Food and Beverage, Chef Calvin Belknap, and his culinary team led by Chef Edward Swetz will prepare the same six-course meal prepared for the delegates back in 1944 – but with a modern twist.

The Mount Washington Resort is well into an extensive $50 million renovation project.  “Everyone here at Mount Washington Resort, specifically the Mount Washington Hotel, is eager to show off our recent refurbishment,” said Patrick Corso, President and CEO of Mount Washington Resort.  “The refurbishment has all been done to preserve the historic quality and sense of ‘place’ here in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.”
