Guernsey County gears up

 For Memorial Day weekend events

 

CAMBRIDGE, OH (May 12, 2009) – Summer is just around the corner and Cambridge offers plenty of events, activities and open attractions for the Memorial Day Weekend.

 

If you are looking for fresh local products to make your Memorial Day picnic or cook-out delicious, then look no farther than the Guernsey County Farmers Market. The Guernsey County Farmers Market, located at the Courthouse Square in Cambridge, boasts more than 25 small farmers and producers that carry seasonal vegetables, fruits, frozen local meats, organic produce, flowers, baked goods and handmade arts and crafts. The Guernsey County Farmers Market will be open on Friday, May 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

 

The Byesville Scenic Railway will be transporting passengers back in time to the days when coal mining was king in Guernsey County. You will be able to listen to the stories of the local miners, sing along to songs and relax on the 1 ½ hour trip. Tickets are $12 for adults and $9 for children. Children under three are free. The Byesville Scenic Railway will be open on Saturday and Sunday (May 23 – 24) at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. for train trips.

 

The Pony Pull will take place at the Arena in Rocky Fork Recreation on Sunday, May 24. The whole family will enjoy seeing the amazing strength, stamina and athletic ability of these pony teams! Stadium seating is available and admission is free.

 

The Wilds, located near Cumberland, Ohio, is one of the largest and most innovative conservation centers in the world. The preserve spans 14 square miles of reclaimed surface mined land and seeks to advance conservation through science, education, and personal experience. Visitors can go on guided tours in air-conditioned or open-air transports where they can see Asian, African, and North American wildlife up close. The Wilds will be open on May 23 and 24 as well as Memorial Day (May 25) from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

 

The Stone House Museum, located at Salt Fork State Park in Cambridge, was built in 1840 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There will be special displays throughout the year and tours will be offered throughout the Memorial Day Weekend May 22-25 from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.


Join the Guernsey County Historical Museum located on 218 N. 8th Street in Cambridge as they host an Open House immediately after the Memorial Day Parade in downtown Cambridge on May 25. 1950's and 60's articles will be on display throughout the museum.  Entertainment and craft demonstrations will also be available during the event. The Open House will be held from 11am-3pm and refreshments will be served.
