Breakaway with your family at Frenchmans Lookout, Tortola

11-13-2007

Frenchmans Lookout in Tortola, a villa with nearly a three hundred sixty degree vista of the British and US Virgin Islands and the Caribbean sea is made for a family getaway. A house to yourself, five bedrooms with bath, swimming pool, game room, lots of help and available babysitters. This is an oasis of sunshine and calm with lots to do or not do for every member of the family.

Families are initially eager to seek out activities, but Frenchmans has been careful to design a program that has something for everyone: breakfast each day served whenever and wherever you like, a welcome dinner, one full day of snorkeling and exploring on a 35 foot motor yacht with professional captain. And for Mom and Dad, also included are ten one-hour spa treatments, from massage, yoga to manicures, from the Serenity Spa given right on the property by spa owners, Indian trained couple, Appu Ganesan and Monali Bhatewara.

Frenchmans Lookout, caressed by constant trade winds, sits on one of the highest points on Tortola's west end. It is a two story Carolina house with a grand wrap around porch on each floor. It was purchased in 2001 by Richard Friedman, a legendary American hotelier with aesthetic sensibilities and concern for detail. Several years of remodeling and refurbishing has turned it into an ultra-comfortable Caribbean House. Each of the five bedrooms, four upstairs and one on the ground floor, open out onto a wrap around verandah. In fact, every room on both levels opens onto the porch via double mahogany French doors, even the bathrooms. On the main floor are a comfortable living room with music and entertainment center and a newly renovated and well equipped kitchen. Across the spacious foyer is the dining room with mirrored closet doors reflecting the surrounding vibrant blue sea. Here a welcome dinner is served by a private chef. Off the great room is the meticulously kept garden framing the L shaped swimming pool and barbeque gazebo high above the harbor and small village of Soper's Hole. There is also a game room for the kids off the garden.

For the very active, native Tortola houseman and driver Clarence will be happy to tell you where to go and get you there: wonderful nearby beaches like Smuggler's Cove and Cane Garden Bay, good restaurants and shopping in Road Town. And for workaholics, there is even a fully furnished office with internet access. But…frankly by the second or third day activity diminishes and guests opt to lie in the many hammocks hanging on the warm, breezy porches, look out at the sea and watch a parade of ships passing by.

The five-nights for a family of 10 people is $13,000, approximately $278.50 per person per day. The price includes 5 nights, arrival and return transfer, welcome cocktail and dinner, breakfast each morning, one full day with lunch on a captained yacht, with lunch, and ten spa treatments. 4% gratuities and 7% tax are not included.
