            For 17 days, this worldly affair will offer outstanding performances in Charleston’s historic theatres and churches, transforming this beautiful Southern city into one of the most diverse performing arts scenes in the country. Headlining a robust 2009 schedule is the UK’s Kneehigh Theatre.  This group is returning to Charleston with the U.S. premiere of its newest production, Don John, a sharp and sexy retelling of the Don Juan legend; musically rich yet rarely performed.  They will also present Gustave Charpentier’s operatic ode to Paris, Louise, which features young Ukrainian-American soprano Stefania Dovhan in the title role; and Basil Twist, returning to the festival to present his ingenious and mesmerizing Japanese-inspired Dogugaeshi.

Festival first-timers include the Dutch theater group Kassys performing an entertaining parody of reality-TV culture with the U.S. premiere of Good Cop Bad Cop. Contemporary Japanese choreographer/performer Hiroaki Umeda will draw upon his eclectic training in ballet, hip-hop and butoh to create an exciting and sophisticated dance experience.  A full festival calendar can be found at www.spoletousa.org.
