Unique tips for traveling abroad on a budget

03-18-2009

Many Americans consider a trip to Europe a rite of passage or the ultimate dream vacation; however, for years traveling abroad has been considered a luxury due to sky-high currency conversion rates that left American travelers with a lot less than they bargained for.

With the current value of the dollar increasing and the value of the British pound and euro weakening, now may be the best time to take the European vacation of a lifetime and get the most bang for your buck – literally. In addition to the great exchange rate the dollar is receiving, many airlines are offering discounted airfare and finding more practical ways of seeing the sites without breaking the bank.

Travelers are also rethinking pricey accommodations by taking advantage of modern hostels. Once thought of as solely for young travelers, hostels have come into the mainstream. In fact, approximately 30 percent of Hostelworld.com bookers are 30 years old or older.

Many of today’s hostels have smaller dorms, private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, while some even offer luxurious amenities like flat screen TVs swimming pools and have their own bar and nightclub. With the currency conversion rates favoring the dollar, American travelers are receiving even more value from staying in a European hostel. For example, in London travelers paid nearly 28% less for a room this February than they did last year at the same time.

Consider these unique tips for traveling abroad on a budget and must see locations off the beaten path.
