A Tuscan Villa with ties to Michelangelo and Machiavelli

01-13-2009

Villa Mangiacane, the luxurious five-star hotel set on a sprawling Tuscan Villa is a mind-blowingly beautiful property. Sure, it offers exclusive and unprecedented services to its guests. But for the discerning travelers looking for more than pretty and luxury, Villa Mangiacane astounds with its historical ties to the renowned Machiavelli family and the Renaissance master, Michelangelo himself.

Built by the powerful Machiavelli family thanks to generous commissions given by their relative, His Holiness Pope Urban VIII, Villa Mangiacane is a magnificent 15th century Renaissance villa, just seven miles south of Florence.  Niccolò Michiavelli, a central political figure in the Italian Renaissance, actually wrote his infamous political treatise, The Prince, at Villa Mangiacane.

Period paintings and original Renaissance frescoes can also be seen adorning the imposing walls of the villa. Architectural details of the noble and majestic home are a tribute to Michaelangelo’s participation in its design.  In fact, because of the significance of the owners and architects, Villa Mangiacane’s original architectural plans are preciously guarded at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

Continuing the Italian nobility’s tradition of sponsoring the arts, Villa Mangiacane’s gardens offer a natural showroom of sculptures, where guests are introduced to a variety of styles such as Zimbabwean Shona - the most important African art movement of the 20th Century, counting Prince Charles as an avid collector.
