Winery Tours: The Finds of Southern Oregon

Southern Oregon is known more for salmon and Shakespeare (in Ashland) than for exciting wines. It was therefore a pleasant surprise to discover excellent wineries in perfect settings well worth the visit.

Scott Henry, the owner, was an aeronautical engineer. When he returned to the family orchard, he discovered that his land was too rich to "stress" the grapes. He then used his technology savvy to develop the world-imitated Scott Henry Trellis. This working winery welcomes visitors seven days a week, and is only closed on holidays and Super Bowl Sunday. Don't miss Henry's Pinot Gris and the Müller Thurgau.

When you are there, be sure to taste their Grüner Veltliner or Gru Ve, as its fans call it. This Austrian grape can produce wines that taste like the brighter child of a marriage between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Reustle Gru Ve recently beat Austrian wines in a blind tasting and was named one of the Top 100 wines of the Northwest. Stephen and Gloria Reustle are a youthful East Coast couple who sold their successful direct marketing company, moved out of New York, and established their vineyard in 2001.
