FOX AND NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVEL HOST NAMES TOP FIVE OVERRATED GLOBAL TRAVEL DESTINATIONS

12-09-2008

Paris, Athens, Dubai and More Make the List

WHAT: December 9, 2008 – Leon Logothetis, host of “Amazing Adventures Of A Nobody” has listed his top five overrated destinations in a Los Angeles Times editorial. The list contained several surprises and can be found below, complete with the reasoning behind the rating.

  1. Athens, Greece

Despite being Greek himself, Logothetis placed the capital of his homeland in fifth place on his most overrated list.  He reasoned that the city was overcrowded, badly polluted with smog and that Greeks are too high-strung to allow for a relaxing vacation. However Logothetis did praise Greece’s ‘majestic beauty…and raw beauty.’

  1. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Its modernization may have given it one of the most impressive sky-lines in the world, but at the same time it has deprived Dubai of soul. Capitalism has supplanted local culture and the creature comforts that this desert metropolis offers serve to mollycoddle rather than captivate according to Logothetis.

3 .Prague, Czech Republic

Over crowded tourist traps meant the city’s most renowned destinations were a struggle to enjoy. Despite the younger generation’s willingness to embrace the changes brought about in the period following the cold war, many of the older generation still adhere to an East vs. West mentality, and, according to Logothetis, do not enjoy smiling much.

2. Moscow, Russia

The most expensive destination in Europe has unsurprisingly prohibitive prices. $8 for a Starbucks and $22 for a Vodka Redbull, are just two examples of the exorbitant cost of living cited by Logothetis. Add to that the taxi drivers who unflinchingly rip off tourists and Moscow is a city that takes the unaware for ‘a ride.’

  1. Paris, France

Paris in Leon’s mind is still one of the greatest cities in the world, unfortunately he claims its residents do not match the majesty of its streets. Curt, rude, and unwilling to speak English, despite their frequent proficiency in the language, Leon did not find his match in the City of Love.

WHO: As host of his show, “Amazing Adventures of a Nobody,” Logothetis crosses cities, countries and continents surviving on just $5 a day.  He’s allowed to accept gifts from strangers and work for food or lodging but isn’t allowed to beg for money or go over the agreed daily sum of 5 Euros.  He can only stay in each city for one night, adding heightened drama and intensity to his journey. In seasons one and two Leon crossed the US and UK in this manner, in season three Logothetis crossed Europe travelling from Paris to Moscow surviving on 5 Euros a day. Season three will premier on Fox Reality January 25, 2009.
