SAVUSAVU SOUTH PACIFIC MUSIC FESTIVAL IN FIJI CELEBRATES ISLAND MUSIC & DANCE, NOVEMBER 12 - 15, 2008

Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort and Air Pacific

Among Leading Sponsors of Fifth Annual Event on Vanua Levu

OCTOBER 21, 2008, SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The 5th Annual Savusavu South Pacific Music Festival will feature four exciting days of popular musical and cultural activities to be held on November 12 - 15, 2008.  Under the theme of a “musical safari through the islands,” the festival will showcase the best musical and dance performers in the South Pacific islands, including indigenous musicians, dance theatres and more.  Based on recent years’ highly successful events, the festival will be held in several venues – including leading destination resorts – in and near Savusavu on Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second-largest island.  The exciting celebration includes both ticket-only evening performances and a complimentary afternoon event on the final day that welcomes the entire community.  To encourage attendance from North America, special airfares and resort packages are offered in conjunction with the festival.

The 2008 Savusavu Music Festival presents an exciting roster of the South Pacific islands’ best music and vocal talent, along with other arts performers.  While each night features a different experience with different performers, all events highlight the top musical performers from around the islands under starry, tropical skies.

As in previous years, a highlight of the festival is the invited bands in concert.  Each participating resort will arrange its own roster of performers for the festivities.  Featured musicians include groups from various South Pacific islands, such as Fiji, Hawaii, Vanuatu, Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia.

One of the properties spearheading the music festival – an enthusiastic sponsor of all five annual events – is the award-winning Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort.  Its performers for 2008 include 4 Bois, Lena Baravilalal, Pacifika, Jim Morrison, the resort’s own Bula Boys, the Vilivili Stick Dancers and the Sekawa Meke group.  Other special events during the fun-filled evening of November 12 include a delectable dinner, a live auction and dancing under the stars to the exceptional music.

In addition to Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort, musical events will be held at and sponsored by Savusavu Hot Springs Hotel and Koro Sun.  Festival tickets prices vary by venue.

Besides performances at individual music festival venues, the festival will also feature numerous other engaging, music-related activities, such as:

·         A Talent Quest for non-professionals in various categories, with prizes for the winners

·         Workshops in several musical areas pertaining to South Pacific music

·         Musical street performances in Savusavu Township

An evening finale on the last night:  Winners of the Talent Quest receive their prizes, then all guests enjoy music, dancing and fun at the Jungle Dance Night.  To encourage wide attendance, tickets for the Jungle Dance night are modestly priced at FJD$10.
