Rockfish is the Catch of the Day during the 2008 Striped Bass World Championship, Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout and American Striper Association’s National Tournament

 

(Virginia Beach, Va., October 7, 2008) – Massive schools of rockfish, also known as striped bass, lure anglers to Virginia Beach during the winter months in Virginia Beach – in fact, they are so abundant,  Virginia Beach is known as the “Striped Bass Capital of the World.” From November through January, Virginia Beach hosts three striped bass tournaments where anglers compete in hopes of catching some of the largest striped bass on record. Striped Bass World Championship

The annual Striped Bass World Championship from November 1 –  December 31 offers cash and prizes in several categories, including tournament largest overall, largest monthly, junior (16 years or younger), women’s, fly fishing, surf and pier, as well as military. In 2007, the two-month event awarded hundreds of prizes valued at over $9,000. Last year's top striper caught by Richard Hylton of Rileyville, Virginia weighed in at 51lbs. 5ozs. The American Striper Association’s 2008 National Tournament

            For the first year ever, the nation’s largest Striped Bass Tournament Series will hold its season-ending national tournament in Virginia Beach on December 13. The American Striper Association’s 2008 National Tournament will offer prizes exceeding $100,000 for the tournament and Angler of the Year awards. The move to Virginia Beach will allow tournament participants to familiarize themselves with fishing conditions in the Chesapeake Bay which is considered to have the strongest Striped Bass Fishery in the country. Holding the National Tournament in Virginia Beach in December will also help anglers prepare for the 2009 American Striper Association 2009 Series kickoff tournament, the Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout held January 8th-10th in Virginia Beach. Waterman’s Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout

The annual Waterman’s Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout is the largest rockfish (a.k.a. striped bass) tournament in the country, hosted out of Virginia Beach’s Rudee and Lynnhaven Inlets from January 8-10, 2009. In 2008, 300 boats and over 1,000 anglers participated and the total tournament payout to the top seven teams was $202,545 in cash and prizes, with first place receiving over $35,000. Over $20,000 has been donated back to the community. Already, the tournament draws participants from all four corners of the country and as far away as the state of Washington and Texas. This is a team tournament and there is no limit to the number of anglers/team members per entry. Each team is eligible to weigh-in their three largest striped bass that measures over 28” fork length and is awarded 1 point per pound. The Rockfish Shootout benefits “Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs,” The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center.
