Hyatt Harnesses the Wind

Starting today gavels will whack the Democratic podiums and then again a week later on Republican podiums and the games of politics will replace the games of the Olympics on TV and Internet monitors all across the U.S. Maybe even around the world for people eager to see who might be the next occupant of the White House. The conventions are good entertainment. Lots of heated rhetoric, lots of angst (for participants as well as observers), lots of inadvertent comedy and a plethora of hot air.

Too bad that hot air couldn't drive some wind power turbines to make the conventions even greener than they promise to be.

But things are greening up nicely. We just recently learned that the Hyatt Regency Hotels in both of the convention cities - Denver and Minneapolis - could make the convention organizers green with envy. The hotels have announced plans to utilize 100% wind power during the conventions. Nice touch, since both DNC and RNC have chosen the Hyatt properties as their official headquarters: Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center for the Dems and Hyatt Regency Minneapolis for the GOP.

During the conventions, operational power for both Hyatts will be provided by Xcel Energy's Windsource program. Another nice touch, since Xcel Energy, according the American Wind Energy Association, is the number one utility wind power provider in the U.S.

Giant turbines convert wind to electricity to light up the Republican National Convention headquarters at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.
