WHAT'S NEW IN STOCKHOLM AUGUST 2008

08-20-2008

Arlanda Airport to welcome EasyJet
European low-cost carrier EasyJet plans to initiate flights this fall from Geneva and Milan to Stockholm's Arlanda Airport. In the last five years the number of low-cost flights available to and from Arlanda has tripled, making Stockholm more accessible by air than ever before.

Stockholm for the dogs
Man's best friend can now call two of Stockholm's First hotels home. Hotel Reisen and Hotel Amaranten are the first in Stockholm to offer accommodations that cater not only to guests, but to their furry friends as well. Each pet-friendly room provides a goody-box with dog-related items and comes with extra housekeeping service throughout the day.

Its crayfish season in Sweden
During mid-August Swedes can be found feasting at crayfish parties. In Stockholm two restaurants are catering to shellfish aficionados by providing crayfish smorgasbords: Ulriksdals Wärdshuswill serve crayfish throughout August, Monday to Friday during the evenings, and Grands Veranda will serve dinner Aug.14-24. Swedish crayfish are boiled with dill and salt, and the typical crayfish party includes "knäckebröd" (crisp bread), cheese and "snaps" and beer to wash it down.

New outdoor restaurant by Djurgården
Fiore, a new outdoor restaurant, has opened in the Djurgårdsbrunnsbron-bridge area of Östermalm in Stockholm. A simple Italian menu compliments the relaxed atmosphere. Fiore is located on Strandvägen 56.

More room to cool off
The world's first permanent Absolute Ice Bar has doubled in size. Located at the Nordic Sea Hotel, the venue now accommodates up to 60 guests -- ideal for a brief but cool meeting. Novel additions for meetings and parties can include products frozen in blocks of ice, presentations projected onto sheets of ice or as the ultimate team-building challenge, an ice-sculpting competition.

In addition, Nordic Sea has added three meeting rooms: Havet, Horisonten and Djupet. The spaces provide meeting organizers some unique features such as daylight simulation, below-zero temperatures, relaxed seating with couches and armchairs, and an ultra-hip circular bar surrounded by "write walls" (walls you can write on).

Gallery to highlight design
The latest design gallery in Stockholm, Designgalleriet, is set to feature two new exhibits every month, bringing fun and creative design to Stockholm's gallery scene. The intimate gallery is located at Odengatan 21 on the corner of Birger Jarlsgatan.

200 new experiments at family attraction
Tom Tits Experiment in Södertälje, south of Stockholm, has grown by leaps and bounds, adding 200 new experiments to its already existing 400. As one of the largest and most popular children's attractions in Stockholm, Tom Tits features interactive experiments for children of all ages, including the young at heart. Among the latest additions are a bicycle that climbs up the wall, a 40-meter (131 feet) long slide, a giant robot roller coaster and a water rocket.

First design hostel opened this summer
Sweden and Stockholm welcomed its first Design Hostel this summer. Located at Gärdet and situated close to major attractions near Djurgården Island, the hostel will be furnished exclusively with Swedish designs.
