Arizona's Canyon De Chelly: No Long Lines or Hot Tempers

Summer time is vacation time, right?

That equates to long lines and potential irritability, especially at the nation's most popular vacation spots which generate the biggest crowds and the highest rates for rooms, tours, food and souvenirs.

But that's not the case in one of Arizona's major canyons - not the Grand, but the Canyon de Chelly National Monument in northeastern Arizona. This quiet national monument often has comfortable temperatures and rooms available throughout the summer - even at the last minute. And, unlike many of the country's man-made vacation destinations, authenticity is in abundance. Plus a nice bonus: there's no entrance fee to the park.

Strange formations dot Canyon de Chelly, along with petroglyph carvings and pictograph drawings created by ancient races.

While the major national parks draw millions of visitors each year, Canyon de Chelly draws only about 825,000 visitors annually. And while temperatures throughout the Southwest often soar during August and September, the temperature in Canyon de Chelly is generally moderate. It should be - the floor of the canyon is more than a mile above sea level and humidity levels are typically in single digits.

Canyon de Chelly, considered sacred land and one of the historically and culturally significant places in the Navajo Nation, is one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes in North America. The Anasazi - "Ancient Ones" - lived in the canyon for more than a thousand years and left around 1300 A.D. The Canyon also sustains a living community of Navajo people and is unique among National Park service units because it's comprised entirely of Navajo Tribal Trust Land.

Which is why, with the exception of one short hiking trail, the canyon's architecture, artifacts, and rock imagery can only be explored in the company of a Navajo guide.
