The Real Deal in Bali

05-30-2008

Riding a ‘Bali Hai’

May 27, 2008 – The mystical, languorous quality that inspired the duo of Rogers and Hammerstein is still alive and well down in the real Bali, and the smash hit revival of South Pacific here in New York is yet another telltale sign that Bali is back!  Sure there’s gay Paris or sexy St. Barth’s, but who wants to book their holiday in Euros?  With gas prices creeping towards the four dollar mark, traveling domestically doesn’t seem any better, so now is the time to escape to Bali.  Without skimping on luxury, visitors can get more bang for their bucks, and these savings more than pay for the plane ticket – so no need to travel by boat with Lt. Cable and the rest of the crew!

In Seminyak, Bali’s answer to South Beach or St. Barth’s, a palatial-sized room at the recently opened Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa starts at $380 for double occupancy per night.  Compare this to a room in St. Bart’s at nearly half the size and twice the price.  Savings are found throughout the Indonesian island where a cab costs $2 and a delicious meal is $10.  Plus, while the dollar has not been faring well in other countries, here the rupiah has remained relatively steady.  One really might think it’s still 1949 with these prices!  In search of a spa?  Head to COMO Shambhala Estate at Begawan Giri where prices begin at $1,213 for a three-night, nearly all inclusive program or Uma Ubud where a similar stay starts at $1,320.  Compare these to ONE night at The Golden Door in California or at Miraval, Arizona which can cost over $1000 per night and alsoth includes accommodation, meals, and program.

Anantara Seminyak Bali

“Gonna Wash That [Sand] Right Out of My Hair …”

Where could be better than Bali’s beaches to experience the best of the island’s offerings?  Anantara Seminyak Bali is quickly asserting itself as the place to stay in Bali’s hottest place to be.  With each suite measuring 800 square feet, the whole crew could bunk in one of these rooms.  Utilizing extensive glass paneling, the resort brings the vast waterscape of Seminyak Beach into the interiors – even the bathrooms offer sea views (beats a porthole, huh?).  Continue to enjoy the coastal views from the suites’ large wooden balconies with open-air terrazzo tubs for two – is that Emile and Nellie next door?  But this isn’t 1949: each suite affords every modern convenience expected by luxury travellers – Wi Fi Internet access, iPod and docking stations, Bose DVD players with surround sound, and plasma screen TVs.  Enjoy “an enchanted evening” on the resort’s stunning rooftop bar, Sunset on Six where – after the sun sets – things kick up a notch (for the sailor in all of us) as world-renown DJs spin the latest in hip-hop and dance.  Rumor has it, it’s the new Ku De Ta, and who knows – maybe love will find you just as it found nurse Nellie?

COMO Shambhala Estate at Begawan Giri

Of course, nurses and sailors, not to be forgotten are two other Balinese gems which offer incredible value as well.  Nurse Nellie knows the importance of taking care of oneself, so she’d be sure to recommend the COMO Shambhala Estate at Begawan Giri.  Near Ubud – the cultural capital of Bali – The Estate has established itself as one of the world’s leading residential health retreats and features five new wellness programs: Get Fit, Cleansing, Stress Management, Rejuvenation, and Ayurvedic.  Each includes accommodation (prices based on double occupancy), breakfast, lunch, dinner (excluding beverages), return airport transfers, participation in The Estate’s daily schedule of activities, the services of a Personal Assistant, and the complimentary use of the steam room, sauna, and lap pool.

Uma Ubud

The nearby sister property to The Estate, Uma Ubud has designed a new package that capitalizes on the natural richness of Ubud and its surrounding areas.  Called “Ubud Active,” this three-night package promises an action-packed adventure.  Composed of fun, challenging treks through the rice paddy and temple dotted countryside, exciting rafting excursions on the Ayung river, and an exhilarating mountain bike ride from Mt. Batur (an active volcano), it provides an insider’s guide to the region.  Back at Uma Ubud, luxuriate at the COMO Shambhala Retreat with a 60-minute massage and private yoga instruction.  The three night package includes airport transfers, breakfast daily, one lunch, and one dinner.
