Chasing Rabbit in Malta

Have you ever done this? Traveled to a foreign city, rushed through all the ubiquitous visitor sites and then left, experiencing little of the culture or local flavor of the place? It's a shame really. It's always so much more interesting when you meet local people, talk with them, see what they do and how they live. It's happened to us a few times. None more memorable than in Malta.

While on a Mediterranean cruise, we stopped at the island of Malta, in the city of Valletta. Entering the harbor, we were overwhelmed by the sight of this UNESCO World Heritage landmark of sheer limestone cliffs and buildings. Built by Christian knights in 1566 as a fortress to protect the city from the Turks, it later became the capital of the Maltese Islands.

While St. John's Cathedral, the first complete example of the high baroque style anywhere, is the must-see in Valletta, it was rabbits that beckoned us to this beautiful city. Rabbit, cooked and served with style.

Somewhere we had read that rabbit, or fenek in Maltese, is almost a national dish there. It's so popular, we were told, that it's given rise to a word for a special night out - the Fenkata, a group of friends dining out on rabbit. And that's exactly what we were. Five friends, a fenkata, out to have some fun during the perfect rabbit luncheon. We were told that several Valletta bars and restaurants were renowned for their excellent rabbit. All we had to do was find one.
