Tips for Travel with Kids

05-17-2008

Orlando and Vegas Still Top Destinations

[Munich, Germany] – [May 22, 2008] –  According to a 2008 American Society of Travel Agents survey, Orlando and Las Vegas top the list of domestic travel destinations for yet another summer season. Internationally, London and Rome were the top two.  If your summer travel plans include kids, mom expert Christine Louise Hohlbaum suggests planning ahead to avert unnecessary stress. She has logged over 100,000 air miles and over 30 domestic and international flights with her own children, ages 6 and 9.

“Air travel can be particularly hard with toddlers,” notes Ms. Hohlbaum, a Virginia native whose both children took their first flights before they were two months old. “Always have a ration of grapes to keep your toddler hydrated. It’s less messy than juice boxes.”

Other tips include:

  • If flying, arrive to the airport with plenty of time. Take advantage of the airlines’ early boarding procedure for families.
  • Bring extra snacks, a change of clothes for everyone, and plenty of diapers.
  • Take breaks. Let the kids run where possible to burn off extra energy.
  • For long trips, bring along games. An old-fashioned game of I-Spy in the car can help melt the miles.
  • Avoid the “when are we going to get there” trap by setting a timer or showing them your GPS travel route so the kids can keep track themselves.
  • Consider your destination. Avoid places with stairs, such as Venice, if you’re reliant on a stroller.
  • Ignore the glances. Everyone was a kid once!
