-- Discover inside secrets you will not find in a guide book --

NEW YORK, April 14, 2008 – Public displays of affection, high fives and the word ‘awesome’ really aren’t very British.  To find out what is, then you should meet our British Friends.  They are real people living all over Britain who will be sharing their personal British experiences, as part of the second year of the ‘be a Brit different’ consumer marketing campaign sponsored by VisitBritain, the national tourist office for England, Scotland and Wales.

Americans visiting www.visitbritain.com/us can connect with these British Friends who will help them have a brilliant (amazing) time on their next trip to Britain.  Our British Friends will reveal the best spots to grab a bite (eat some food) at the local chippies (fish and chip restaurants), for heading to a local pub to check out a local band, have a pint (beer) or watch a match (soccer game), and other tips that you could only get from a local.

Our British Friends hail from England’s North Country, Heart of England, London, South West England and Wales and they are as diverse as their regions.   Meet some of them for yourself.

Ø      Peter, who is from Edinburgh, Scotland, resides in Ravenglass in the Western Lake District in England’s North Country.  He is a former veterinarian turned castle owner.  Peter will help you to discover the largest owl sanctuary at Muncaster Castle, as well as to take the Ravenglass Eskdale Railway to see the spectacular Hardknott Roman Fort.

Ø      Or, Michael, who is from a small village on the outskirts of North East London, is a former Scotland Yard detective / inspector turned speed boat entrepreneur.  He will help you to see London like you have never seen it before by taking you on a high speed boat up the River Thames to learn about historical tales of intrigue for well-known sites such as Big Ben, Tower of London and Westminster Abbey.

Ø      Or, Wendy who lives in Blockley, a small town near Moreton-in-Marsh in the Cotswolds.  She is an avid gardener who will give you suggestions for some of the spectacular gardens in the area.  She can also give you tips for meandering along the picturesque Cotswolds’ pathways.

Ø      Or, Peter, who is from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and he currently resides in Bath.  He has ridden the Trans Siberian Express no less than 15 times but he still loves his hometown of Bath.  He will encourage you to soothe your senses and bathe in the natural hot waters at the Thermae Bath Spa.  He will also tempt you with some of the most mouth-watering buns courtesy of Sally Lunn Bunns.

Ø      And, Andy, who is from the spiritual capital of Wales, a city called St. David, spends his days jumping off cliffs with groups of people in a sport for the fearless called coasteering.  He will encourage you to experience Wales’ pioneering spirit by wandering along the Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park, Britain’s only coastal park with 240 square miles of spectacular scenery and experience Wales’ pioneering spirit.

“One of the things that makes Britain special for Americans is that they can get to know real Brits easily and get under the skin of the destination.  Our British Friends will give Americans an insider’s scoop about their hometown that they cannot find elsewhere.  We hope close friendships will develop between them as they share similar interests and discover ways to live like a local during their vacation in Britain,” says Simon Bradley, executive vice presi
