CN Tower Floors Visitors with Newly Enhanced Elevator

04-14-2008

World's Top Elevator Ride* Introduces Glass Floor Panels

April 9, 2008  (TORONTO)  Lifting off April 9, 2008, the CN Tower introduced North America's first and the world's highest glass floor paneled elevator.

One of the Tower's six glass-fronted elevators was recently enhanced to present a thrilling new perspective on the view 346m (1,136 feet) straight down.  A portion of the elevator floor now features two glass panels which when combined represent almost 0.6m2 (6 ft2) of floor space.

"We're delighted to introduce a thrilling new way to provide Toronto visitors and residents with a memorable experience and added value to their visit to the CN Tower," said Jack Robinson, Chief Operating Officer of the CN Tower.  "The breathtaking views from our glass-fronted elevators have always been an exciting part of any visit to the CN Tower and we've just added a whole new dimension to that ride."

Thousands of enthusiastic Toronto visitors and residents visiting the Tower on April 9th were delighted to be among the first to ride the enhanced elevator and experience the new view.  Visitors reveled with awe in the sensation of ascending and seeing the ground dramatically drop away at 6m/second.

Traveling at a speed of 22km/15mph, the Tower's six glass-fronted elevators rocket guests to the top of its glass-fronted elevator shaft - 346m/1136ft in 58 seconds, earning the distinction as the World's #1 elevator ride.   In 2007 the CN Tower and 360 Restaurant achieved 12 awards which included the Tower's elevator ride listed #1 on the World's Top 10 Elevator Rides in National Geographic's JOURNEYS OF A LIFETIME: 500 of the World's Greatest Trips.

As part of the Tower's ongoing upgrades, the elevator car replacement was recently completed to include two glass floor panels each almost 2½ inches thick (2 5/16 inch (5.08 cm)) which when combined total almost 0.6m2 (6ft2) of the total 3.64m2 (39.25ft2) elevator floor space.  The glass panels in the enhanced elevator were designed using the same technology, strength and durability standards of the CN Tower's famous Glass Floor which has been walked on and experienced by millions of people since it was first installed in 1994.

Due to popular demand, a ride aboard the enhanced elevator is subject to availability, with priority given to Total Tower and Premier Ticketholders at this time.  The Total Tower experience is the CN Tower's do-it-all best value ticket and includes Look Out, Glass Floor and Sky Pod Observation Levels, Film, and Motion Theatre Ride for $32.99 plus applicable taxes (over 30% savings).

"We believe this elevator will be extremely popular and hope to have as many as three of the CN Tower's six elevators enhanced with this feature in future," announced Robinson.

Since it was first built, high operating standards and ongoing upgrades have ensured an ongoing investment in maintaining a leading edge facility and world-class experience for almost two million who visit this landmark icon each year:  * adapting to technological advances, the CN Tower remains a major telecommunications hub * introduced the world's first motion theatre ride * introduced the world’s first Glass Floor in 1994 * Built a wine cellar in the sky in 360 The Restaurant at the CN Tower at 351m (Guinness designated World's Highest) holds one of Toronto and Canada's most extensive selections (Wine Spectator Two Goblet since 1999) * two new elevators were added in 1996 to accommodate increasing visitor numbers * leading edge security technology was installed in 2002 * new meeting space was added in 2006 to meet growing demand at this unique venue * in
