RIVER RAFTING A POPULAR VACATION CHOICE AS AMERICA CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF WILD & SCENIC RIVERS ACT

03-20-2008

Idaho’s Middle Fork of the Salmon Tops “Must-do” Lists

SALMON, IDAHO – As Americans gear up to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, championed by Senator Frank Church and signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on October 2, 1968 (http://www.rivers.gov/), Idaho’s Middle Fork of the Salmon, one of the original eight rivers in the nation designated and protected by the Act, and situated in the “Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness,” continues to top “must-do” lists nationwide.

“The Middle Fork is, quite simply, the most pristine commercially run river in America,” comments Jerry Hughes, owner/operator of Hughes River Expeditions, one of the premier rafting outfitters on the Middle Fork. “It’s a trip that should be on everyone’s must-do list – whether you’re seven years old or 70. And the earlier you check it off your list, the more time you’ll have to come back, again and again. In fact, 75% of our business is made up of return guests, their friends and referrals.”

With an already above-average snow pack, which equates to an extended whitewater season with bigger flows, Middle Fork rafting trips are already booking well into this season and next. Thrill seekers should book now for a trip in June, say the river’s top outfitters, while July and August will provide ideal conditions and warmer water for families with young children and seniors. The Middle Fork, teeming with wild Westslope Cutthroat Trout, boasts one of the best catch-and-release fly fisheries in the nation, and is home to diverse and stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, soothing natural hot springs and sandy beaches.

The season on Idaho’s Middle Fork runs from June through September. For more information, trip dates and prices, visit or call:
