You're Never Too Old for Summer Camp

Leave it to Travel + Leisure magazine to come up with some new incentive to entice adults to travel. This time it’s summer camp, but with a quirky difference. They’re calling their latest compilation the “World’s 10 Quirkiest Adult Camps.”

As they intimate, grown ups who want to feel like a kid again need only go to an adult summer camp. They’ll have an exciting time, learn something new and different (if not exactly a marketable skill), but won’t have to weave Mom a plastic lanyard.

So here are their selections:

1. Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp
New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, London and coming soon to 25 U.S. cities. But look for one-day camps coming to 25 more U.S. cities

Campers learn the ropes from their rock 'n roll idols including Joe Walsh, Slash, and Max Weinberg. Bring your own instrument or use the camp's. Write and rehearse a song with a celebrity musician/counselor. Daily jam sessions and a finale Battle of the Bands performance at a sold-out venue with guest stars like Roger Daltrey and Brian Wilson. Who’s welcome? Anyone who’s pretended to play guitar à la Jimi Hendrix. : $2,000 for one-day camps, $8,000–$12,000 for four- to five-day camps. www.rockcamp.com

2. Gladiator Training
Cavalieri Hilton, Rome

A three-hour course teaching ancient gladiator combat techniques and history while wearing tunics, Roman sandals, and leather and iron gloves. Brandish authentic gladiator-era replica wooden and iron weapons. The instructors are representatives from the Gruppo Storico Romano, an organization dedicated to the study and reenactment of gladiator culture. Who’s welcome? Anyone who lusts for power and means it when they yell: "Ave Cesare! Morituri te salutant." $760 per person, up to eight people. www.cavalieri- hilton.it
