Play, Learn and Do Good in BC

Long known as a home for trophy salmon fishing, coastal British Columbia is also a mecca for adventure activities. King Pacific Lodge, a Rosewood Resort located in the Great Bear Rainforest, offers a host of world-class eco-adventures from whale watching and glacier walks to fly fishing and the search for the rare Kermode “Spirit Bear.”

These are adventures with a difference: you have a fun challenge and an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the culture and eco-systems around the Lodge. They call it “Playing for Good” and it’s a way to generate Lodge donations to local conservation, wildlife and cultural charities on behalf of the Lodge’s guests.

Sounds good, but be warned, the eco-activities the Lodge has in mind will ensure guests will work hard to generate those donations. For example, only ardent kayakers should attempt the five-mile open water circumnavigation of Ashdown Island. Other adventures appeal to those interested in the history and culture of the area, including mastering a Sm’algyax language place and animal name guide on a cultural tour of the territory. Each eco-effort earns a hundred Canadian dollars for a local school.

“We have long viewed King Pacific Lodge as our partner in business, conservation and social equity” said Ernie Hill, principal of the Hartley Bay School and the Eagle Chief of the Gitga’at Nation of indigenous people. “This new program allows their guests to be part of that—to belong in our territory.”
