There's still time to plan a last-minute fall getaway to Bar Harbor

09-11-2014

(BAR HARBOR, Maine) - As the air turns cooler and the leaves on the trees begin to change their hue, it's the perfect time for a fall getaway to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. There is no other place on the East Coast of the United States that can claim the awe-inspiring views from atop Cadillac Mountain or from a nature cruise along the rocky coastline.

If you're thinking of that last-minute escape this fall, here are some of our top picks for viewing the fall colors:

  • The Carriage Roads ofAcadia National Park: Explore the 51 miles of gravel pathways and granite bridges created by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. for horse-drawn carriages. Always closed to motorized vehicles, the carriage trails are enjoyed by walkers, hikers and bicyclists during the fall.

  • If you prefer the view from your car, the Park Loop Road is a 27-mile scenic ride along the eastern portion of Mt. Desert Island offering access to most of the well-known park sites.
  • Marvel at the magnificent colors from a vantage point on the water, consider sailing on a historic schooner, taking a lobster boat cruise to see how Maine's iconic crustaceans are harvested, search for whales off the coast on a whale watching cruise, or look for seals, puffins, birds and other wildlife that hug the coastline. Or rent a kayak and paddle through your own adventure.

  • And how about the air as your vantage point? Air tours our offered in biplanes and gliders.

  • A stroll down tree-lined Mt. Desert Street in downtown Bar Harbor is a special treat during the fall...and don't miss the Tiffany stained-glass windows of St. Saviour's Church.

Several local inns, hotels and B&Bs offer fall packages and specials. And don't forget, along with it being harvest time, the fresh, local seafood is bountiful this time of year.
