Cape Town, South Africa – July 24, 2013 – Passage to Africa, led by Michael Lorentz, is taking a select group of just 8 travelers to the remote Omo River Valley of Ethiopia. For 11 days from September 7-17, extreme safari enthusiasts will journey through the heart of the country, a stretch untouched by modern civilization from Lalibela in the north to Turmi in the south.

 

Visit a world of traditions that include a young Mursi girl on reaching the age of 15 or 16, having her lower lip pierced so she can wear a lip plate. The larger the lip plate she can tolerate, the more cattle her bride price will bring for her father.

 

Experience the Hamar tribe "bullah" or "jumping of the bulls" when a boy becomes engaged and is about to pass into adulthood. This is a complicated ceremony in which the "maz" or recently initiated men participate, several hundred guests are invited, and he must take a running leap onto the back of the first bull, then run across the backs of up to 30 lined up in a row, without falling, back and forth four times.
