Richmond, B.C., CANADA (July 10, 2013) – Summer has arrived in Richmond, BC. The city’s stellar lineup of festivals and events kicked-off over the July 1 weekend as huge crowds of nearly 100,000 people beat the early summer heat at the 68th Annual Steveston Salmon Festival and nearby Ships to Shore Festival. And that’s only the beginning. From outdoor concerts at a 19th century salmon cannery to feasting on street food at two of the world’s top night markets, here are some of the best ways to experience summer in Richmond and best of all, most events are free.

Richmond Maritime Festival
Where: Britannia Heritage Shipyard National Historic Site, Steveston Village 
When: August 9-11, 2013 
Hours: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, free admission

Ahoy, nautical enthusiasts and young buccaneers. Hoist the sails for an exciting adventure as the 10th Annual Richmond Maritime Festival celebrates the city’s unique maritime heritage in a spectacular waterfront setting. The three days of family-friendly activities will include ship tours, exhibitions, storytellers, dancers, tasty food vendors, entertainment, music and a variety of unexpected sea characters.

International Summer Night Market

Hours: Friday & Saturday 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.; Sunday & Holidays 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., free admission

Hailed as Richmond’s hottest summer food events, this bustling multicultural city boasts not one but two Asian night markets. Under the dark night sky, the city’s two night markets are exhilarating and pulsating with life – live entertainment, games, a combined 400+ retailers, where haggling for kitschy souvenirs is welcome, and near 150 food vendors to satisfy late-night cravings for popular Asian street foods like stinky tofu, grilled BBQ squid, Hong Kong-style curry fishballs, terracotta noodles and okonomiyaki. Equally famous are the hurricane potatoes, seasoned, spiraled deep-fried potatoes on a stick. Thirst quenchers include sugar cane or watermelon juice or the mega popular mango coconut slush. It’s a food lover’s paradise.

Nothing says summer like a warm evening spent by the waterfront listening to sweet summer tunes. The outdoor concert series at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery is back this year with nine concerts sure to please a wide range of musical tastes with performances varying from surf rockers Hang-Ten Hangmen to the smooth jazz sounds of Sibel Thrasher. Slather on the sunscreen then sit back, relax and enjoy the ocean breeze at this unique concert venue – built in 1894 and situated atop wooden pilings over the mighty Fraser River, the Cannery is one of the few remaining 19th century salmon canneries in B.C.
