Winter Activities in Minneapolis Saint Paul Region Include
Holidazzle, Winter Carnival, Red Bull Crashed Ice Event
(Minneapolis Saint Paul, MN) Minnesota often makes headlines for its winter weather, but visitors find it’s an exciting time to experience the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area’s most unique festivals and attractions. Holiday celebrations include downtown lighting ceremonies, shopping specials, holiday lights tours and the Holidazzle Parade which makes its way down Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis Thurs. through Sun. evenings from Nov. 25 – Dec. 18. See floats, bands, choirs and storybook characters all aglow against the city skyline.
The metro region is full of unique holiday activities like Inver Grove Heights’ Holiday on Main Street at the Veteran’s Center Dec. 15 which features music, games, free food and beverages and even humvee rides. Evening activities include a tree lighting and lighted trolley tours. On Dec. 1, Stillwater lights up with its Twinkle Parade, while Lakeville's Holidays on Main will feature Santa, live reindeer, sleigh rides and carolers. Shopping comes in all shapes and sizes to suit all tastes. Large shopping centers like Rosedale andMall of America boast hundreds of shops and restaurants in an enclosed complex, while Stillwater and Waconia offer a one of a kind Main Street shopping experience. Head to the downtowns to combine shopping with a theatrical performance or concert or take in a Timberwolves or Lynxbasketball game at Target Center in Minneapolis. If you’d like to combine holiday cheer with charity, join in the Twelve Bars of Christmas pub crawl downtown Minneapolis on Dec. 14, which benefits Children’s Hospitals. New Year’s Eve is full of fun, beginning with Noon Year’s Eve at Saint Paul’s Como Zoo,where the little ones can count down to noon before naptime. Richfield hosts a family-friendlyCandlelight and Ice New Year’s Eve Celebration at the Wood Lake Nature Center, which includes an outdoor nature walk followed by hot cocoa and toasted marshmallows. On New Year’s Day, join the Minneapolis Polar Dash 5 or 10 K run/walk to benefit Shriners Hospitals. In January, join the locals in celebrating the coolest time of year. Saint Paulites have been embracing the weather and the chance to frolic in snow, on ice and everything in between since 1886. Winter Carnival,Jan. 24- Feb. 3 features parades, pageants, contests and plenty of outdoor activities including snow and ice sculpting contests as well as zany sports like golf in the snow, car racing on ice, ice boating and a Frozen 5-K. Also, the Red Bull Crashed Ice event returns to Saint Paul Jan. 24-26. See the world’s fastest ice cross racers on a frozen downhill course full of twists, turns, canals and chutes, against the backdrop of the Cathedral. That same weekend, Waconia will host the Midwest Vintage Snowmobile Show featuring races, a snowmobile parade, swap meet and rally on Lake Waconia. Minneapolis stages its own frosty events during carnival time. Head to Lake Nokomis for the U.S. Pond Hockey Tournament Jan. 18-20.
