Lake Mead’s Callville Bay: History in
the Making

In 1864, Mormon Bishop Anson Call was selected by Brigham Young to set up a colony and facilities on the Colorado River, which would serve as a steamboat port and make it viable to transport the supplies necessary to support expansion. He settled on a spot about 15 miles upstream from current-day Hoover Dam. It’s been called Call’s Landing, Call’s Fort, and Old Callville but is currently known as Callville Bay.

The steamboat Esmeralda was the first boat to dock at Call’s Landing but certainly not the last. Fast-forward over 100 years later. Callville Bay Marina is a renowned tourist hub rather than a transportation hub. With the building of Hoover Dam and the creation of Lake Mead, the incentive for this “water-side port” has changed dramatically.

Forever Resorts has been the concessioner at Lake Mead National Recreation Area’sCallville Bay for over 31 years and now serves as host to guests from around the world who flock the area to enjoy the splendors of boating and exploration around Lake Mead.[Back to Press Releases Main]
