The TRAVELER'S JOURNAL: October ninth, exploring 50 places/urban spaces.
Two years ago, the magazine National Geographic Traveler, a supporter of our program, produced a special collectors issue which explored "50 Places of a Lifetime," a modern Grand Tour that roamed the globe for sights every traveler should see. This month's issue is a red-white-and-blue version of that idea, 50 American places you should check out before you hang up your traveling shoes.
The first of five sections features loving looks at ten cities with a unique, defining character and an influence beyond their borders. Tightly written sketches include Cokie Roberts' look at Washington D.C., a lovely flowering place, as well as a seat of power. Calvin Trillin explore New Orleans, for whom the big-hearted, Big Easy plays on.
Local columnists Bob Greene, Karl Hiaasen and Mark Miller offer insights on Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles respectfully. Grammy-nominated singer Steve Earle paints a candid portrait of Austin, the dot-com-crazed capital of Texas. Author Allan Gurganus explains how Charleston, SC keeps her charms by keeping her suitors at bay. For Tony Goldman, Philadelphia is always the place America was born. Elizabeth Berg reveals that there's a lot more to Boston than baked beans. Former Microsoft executive Nathan Myhrvold offers his take on Seattle, the city that keeps building better mousetraps. As an extra, best selling author Bill Bryson presents his homage to small towns. The magazine's other four sections explore America's other wonders. Television viewers can also tune in to "50 Places" segments running this week on the National Geographic Channel.
