The TRAVELER'S JOURNAL: October first, traveling in tragedy's wake.
The incomprehensible, volcanic events that have unfolded since September eleven have echoed around the world, affecting millions of lives. The anguish of those who mourn lost loved ones is felt even by those for whom daily life proceeds with some semblance of normalcy.
Normal is a term we each will need to redefine.
The lockdown of America's transportation system stranded millions of travelers in unexpected places and kept many millions more from going somewhere they'd planned. With no transportation, most meetings, conventions, sporting events and vacations were cancelled. Though major airlines, hotels and cruise companies claim they'll allow trips to be rescheduled or refunded at no cost, a confusion of collateral claims and losses is likely. How many travelers will discover insurance policies they purchased come with exclusions against terrorism.
Even with planes flying again, myriad delays resulting from unprecedented security continue to play havoc with ongoing schedules, not to mention passenger confidence or convenience. Whether for fear of flying, instinct to stay at home or respect for the dead, many planned trips have been cancelled. Yet almost everywhere is no different than it once was. Autumn's leaves flare as brightly as always. Only the eyes that see them have changed.
No one knows where this continuing tragedy will lead, how many ways it will ripple through our lives. Yet, it only adds to the tragedy if we lose our will to do the things we love. Pursuing freedom in the face of fear remains an individual act of bravery. Over the coming difficult months, we hope The TRAVELER'S JOURNAL can help listeners regain that sense of normalcy.
