The TRAVELER'S JOURNAL: February twenty-sixth collecting concierge wisdom.

Les Clef d'Or, or the Golden Keys, is the international society of the concierge profession. Found in fine hotels around the world, its members are dedicated to providing expertise and attention that make guests feel special.

The concierge is there to expedite services for guests, so feel free to ask for assistance and advice. They can provide maps and directions, and offer ideas on making the most of your stay, whether it's tickets to theater and sports events or suggesting a safe and scenic route for jogging. More than simply recommending a good restaurant, a concierge can make reservations, often for a better table than you'd get on your own. They can book planes, trains and cars, set up customized sight-seeing expeditions, track down a suitcase left in a cab, even help in getting a marriage license. Their motto: if guests requests something that's legal and ethical, we can make it happen.

Of course, nothing is free. Last minute tickets to hit shows can come at a stiff premium, so let the concierge know what you're willing to pay. The cost of most extras can usually be presented with your final bill. While many may say that no extra remuneration is necessary for their service, tips are generally appropriate, especially for complicated or repeated requests. Good norms to follow are $10 for hard-to-get reservations and $20 or more for complex projects. Rather than paying as you go, the usual procedure is to discreetly pass an envelope at the end of a stay. For truly extraordinary service, a note of commendation to the manager is also appreciated.
