The TRAVELER'S JOURNAL, December eleventh, cautioning that confused travelers make easy prey.
Even in this holiday season, no place on earth is free from rip-off artists, but petty theves pay particular attention to travelers.
For example, Spain is still plagued by urban desperados who like to smash the windows of rental cars at red lights and snatch handbags and suitcases. Another common ploy is to "accidentally" spill something on tourists; while one person helps to clean them off, an accomplice cleans them out.
Other crimes are less obvious. For example, scammers often approach travelers at airports or train stations offering taxi service. Say "yes" and your luggage is whisked away to an unmarked vehicle that may take you where you want to go, but at ten times the cost of a metered cab. In some places like Mexico City, taking unlicensed cabs can be an even riskier proposition.
According to security experts, a traveler's best defenses are still discretion and street savvy. Be aware of local customs and geography. Avoid flashy clothing that will make you stand out as a tourist. Be skeptical about unusual offers and suspicious people at train terminals, hotel lobbies, ATM machines or money- changing locations, places where petty thieves congregate posing as friendly locals. Never feel rude for politely but insistently refusing their offers. Exploiting your guilt is often part of their game.
Finally, avoid displays of wealth. You'll have a lot less to worry about if you leave the family jewels at home.
